During his “real-time” show on HBO, Bill Maher expressed concerns about the Democratic Party’s stance, saying, “The ideological leaders are fostering the idea that America is in crisis and praising those in power in Gaza.” He also noted that the challenge for Democrats lies in winning over younger voters, many of whom he suggests align themselves with terrorists.
Maher remarked, “Democrats need to reclaim their identity… It’s a significant issue for them. Less than one in four individuals under 30 claim to feel proud to be American, while over half find it embarrassing. Are you embarrassed? Is the notion of being American a source of shame for you? It’s all about shared sentiments, really. Is America flawless? No, certainly not. No country is without flaws. But let’s not compare ourselves to places like Russia. In fact, the U.S. leads in numerous progressive issues that resonate with the youth. There are around 14 million women-owned businesses in the country, and black women are starting businesses at a faster rate than their white counterparts. Plus, LGBTQ+ Americans enjoy the right to marry, and a significant portion of them are homeowners. While others in different nations face oppression, here, they can thrive. America’s evolution has been significant, with our government now more diverse than ever.
However, Maher pointed out a dilemma for the Democratic Party, indicating that while they have widespread youth support, they often misinterpret the sentiments around groups like Hamas, viewing them as freedom fighters. He criticized instances where symbols associated with terrorism are praised, mentioning an event in Idaho where a Palestinian flag was thrown over an American flag, garnering approval from the crowd. He suggested that someone in a position of authority should have corrected that notion, reminding the crowd that the keffiyeh is not a sign of liberation.
Maher concluded, “If Democrats keep perpetuating the narrative that America is in despair while admiring Gaza’s leadership, they’re setting themselves up for failure.” He added that some liberals appear weak, overly focused on modern social issues, which he fears could align them with extremist viewpoints.
