This summer, beaches in New York and New Jersey have seen an unprecedented influx of great white sharks. Experts have noted a significant rise in these apex predators along the Atlantic coast, which has also experienced a notable surge in marine life, transforming casual swims into what feels like ocean safaris.
According to marine conservation groups, the region is becoming increasingly attractive to great white sharks. Chris Fischer, founder of OCEARCH, mentioned, “You are at the heart of a major great white shark farm. These great white shark pups are dropped off here every May and June.”
He further emphasized that the rising number of sightings indicates a higher abundance of these creatures in the waters.
Fischer cautioned that anyone entering the ocean should recognize they’re stepping into an environment filled with wildlife. “Once you step into the ocean, you’re just a few steps away from being deep in the wild,” he noted.
Great white sharks typically take about 30 years to reach sexual maturity and can give birth to around eight pups every two years.
OCEARCH has tracked upwards of 100 sharks along the Atlantic Coast, particularly near Long Island, showcasing a positive trend in their population. Fischer remarked, “We started protecting great white sharks approximately 30 years ago, which is why we are now seeing more adults and more pups.” He added, “It’s truly a remarkable return to abundance, yet it’s the biggest story that seems to go untold.”
In recent events, New York City police reported two shark encounters at Rockaway Beach over July 4th and 5th, leading to the closure of the popular beach. Drone footage revealed one shark lurking just 30 feet away from individuals on the shore.
