There’s a new trend buzzing on TikTok revolving around the watermelon diet, which many are trying as a method for weight loss and detoxification. Some users have taken it on for periods ranging from three to seven days.
A number of TikTok creators have shared their experiences, claiming they shed a few pounds by the end of their “fast.”
Experts note that while watermelons are refreshing and hydrating, relying solely on low-calorie fruits can be risky. Dr. Mark Hyman, a physician from Texas and co-founder of Function Health, shared his thoughts on this trend in a discussion.
He expressed concerns about the sustainability of such diets, stating that while watermelon is delicious and full of moisture, using it as a central dietary focus might backfire health-wise. He points out that while watermelons can certainly be a part of a healthy eating plan, they lack essential nutrients and can lead to problems if consumed excessively.
In fact, Hyman cautioned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dieting, especially when it’s influenced by social media rather than established nutritional science. He explained that watermelons are primarily composed of water and sugar, which means important nutrients are lacking, and that may lead to short-term weight loss rather than actual fat loss.
The ultimate goal of weight loss should focus more on making sustainable lifestyle changes rather than seeking quick fixes. Hyman emphasized that the human body naturally detoxifies itself, and consuming whole foods can support this process effectively.
He suggested incorporating a variety of vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and ample fiber into one’s diet, along with improving sleep and managing stress for a holistic approach to health.
Ilana Moorstein, a Los Angeles-based registered dietitian, added that watermelon provides hydration, l-citrulline, and potassium, which can assist the body in detoxifying. She noted that people on the “watermelon detox” often consume substantial amounts—over 12 cups in a day—which translates to a significant water intake from just the fruit.
Additionally, the hydration can help boost the body’s natural detox pathways, although there are potential downsides. While watermelon does indeed provide detoxifying benefits, Moorstein cautioned against pursuing a strict watermelon-only diet, as this could lead to loss of muscle mass fairly quickly.
Experts agree that while watermelon is beneficial in many ways—being high in potassium and potentially aiding in flushing out excess sodium—it can also bring about imbalances if sodium levels drop too low. Moorstein recommended including watermelon in a more balanced diet instead of solely relying on it.
