Exploring the difficulties Belgium poses for the USMNT

Belgium’s World Cup Journey Takes a Turn

SEATTLE — Belgium’s journey in this World Cup has been, well, a bit quiet during the first week. But, as the Round of 16 approached, the Red Devils showcased why they are considered one of the world’s most formidable teams.

Initially, Belgium struggled, going scoreless against Egypt and Iran, with only a single goal to show from their first two group matches. However, they managed to find their footing, finishing the group stage strong with five goals against New Zealand.

Then came a true warning sign. After trailing Senegal in the round of 32, Belgium waited before unleashing a flurry of activity—two goals in just under three minutes pushed the game into extra time, and a dramatic late goal sealed a comeback that highlighted the fierce competitiveness of the tournament.

As the match unfolded, Americans were keenly watching every moment. Midfielder Tyler Adams remarked, “Belgium is a great team. They showed their quality against Senegal.” He noted that playing 120 minutes could be a factor, suggesting that the American team might be a bit fresher and ready to maintain a high tempo.

Fostering that tempo is one tactic, but it has its risks. Senegal started strong but faltered as the match progressed. It’s a gamble to push against a vibrant attacking team like Belgium.

Adams, who leads the midfield and is known for his defensive prowess, realizes the challenge ahead. Belgium boasts an impressive roster of talent, featuring Premier League stars and long-time greats like Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Romelu Lukaku, all of whom shine on the sport’s grandest stage.

“Belgium has an unbelievable team,” Adams expressed. “They’re filled with talent. They play attacking football. How we handle those critical moments is crucial.”

This matchup is particularly significant. In March, Belgium defeated the United States 5-2, but veteran captain Tim Ream emphasized that this match shouldn’t be viewed as a sequel. “We’re two entirely different teams from March,” he noted, “and both are focused on advancing in this prestigious tournament.”

Serginho Dest echoed the sentiment, stressing that concentration must remain unwavering at all times. “We need to stay united and focused,” he stated. “If substitutes come in, they need to be equally committed.”

When facing Belgium, a single mistake can escalate quickly, often resulting in rapid goals.

That encapsulates the challenge that lies ahead for the United States.
