Indian Businessman Sentenced for Money Laundering
Balvinder Singh Sahni, a well-known Indian businessman based in Dubai, has received a five-year prison sentence for his involvement in money laundering activities linked to criminal organizations. The Dubai Court has also ordered the confiscation of 150 million dirhams and imposed a fine of 500,000 dirhams on Sahni. It’s worth noting that he will face deportation upon completing his prison term.
Sahni, who is often referred to as “Absaba,” built his empire as the founder of the RSG Group, which operates across various sectors in the UAE, the United States, and India. He rose to prominence after acquiring the “D5” license plate for a remarkable 33 million dirhams, one of the priciest in the Emirates, which certainly drew considerable media attention to his lavish lifestyle.
Background and Business Ventures
Born on April 7, 1972, in Kuwait City, Sahni has developed a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate that delves into real estate, automobiles, and industrial equipment. His notable projects include Qasr Sabah, a $123 million residential complex in Dubai Sports City, and Burj Sabah, a 24-storey apartment complex in Jumeirah Village Circle. Other projects include the five-star Saba Rotana hotel in Um Sukhem and the four-star Jebel Ali Central Rotana hotel.
Starting his entrepreneurial path at just 18, Sahni pursued a degree in business management and initially established a spare parts business for vehicles. This venture eventually expanded into real estate, leading to the luxury developments that pepper his portfolio today.
Lavish Lifestyle
Sahni has garnered attention for his extravagant purchases, notably the license plate “O9,” priced at 24.5 million dirhams. His affinity for unique numbers seems linked to a belief in their luck, particularly the number 9. “I enjoy collecting special license plates,” he mentioned, reflecting on his attachment to the “D5” plate he acquired. Alongside his luxurious automobile collection, which includes several Rolls-Royces and a Mercedes-AMG G63, he resides in a lavish mansion worth $100 million.
On a philanthropic note, Sahni has made significant contributions to charity in Punjab, particularly after the passing of his parents, by funding various healthcare facilities and housing for the elderly. He even supported initiatives during the Covid-19 crisis, donating 1 million dirhams to the “Together We Are Good” program in Abu Dhabi. His contributions earned him the “Businessman of the Year” award at the Sikh Awards in Dubai in 2020.
