Explosion and building collapse at a Nebraska biofuels facility results in at least 3 fatalities

At least three people, including two children, lost their lives due to a significant explosion at a biofuel factory in Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon.

The explosion at Horizon Biofuels was captured by nearby security footage, revealing the building engulfed in flames. Following the incident, thick black smoke was observed billowing from the structure.

As of Wednesday morning, the fire was still ongoing, preventing emergency crews from entering the site.

Fremont Mayor Joey Sperger announced during a press briefing that the blast occurred shortly before noon. Firefighters later reported that the building had collapsed.

Authorities indicated that a male employee and his two young daughters might have been in the office area close to the company’s grain bin when the explosion happened. The mayor mentioned that the girls, both under 12, were waiting for their father to finish work so they could go to a doctor’s appointment.

Numerous agencies, including the Nebraska State Patrol and various fire departments, have been engaged in combating the flames and evaluating the building’s safety.

Fremont Fire Chief Todd Berndt explained, “We were unable to access the scene early on due to the collapse and damaged steel.” He noted that drones are being utilized for further investigation of the area.

The factory had a history of fires, including one in 2014, and was known to store wood and fuel pellets. A three-mile perimeter around the site remains secured.

Mayor Sperger expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart aches. It’s a tragedy, and we are praying for the families involved. We’re ensuring that all available resources are directed to this location.”

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen’s office has offered support to Fremont, located roughly 30 miles northwest of Omaha. He assured that the state is collaborating with local responders and law enforcement to manage the aftermath of the explosion.

Rep. Mike Flood also stated that his team is working to assist with the response efforts and extended thoughts and prayers to those affected in Fremont and the first responders on-site.
