Influencer Discusses the Cult-like Nature of Climate Activism

Climate change discussions have gone beyond scientific debates and entered a realm of belief systems, which can be harmful to some individuals. Lucy Biggers, known for her role in the viral 2018 campaign video featuring AOC, shares insights on this topic.

In a recent conversation, she recounted how someone mentioned having lost a friend due to their involvement in the climate movement. Biggers highlights a concerning trend among some who feel overwhelmed by these beliefs. She cites a young woman from a Maine university who has decided against having children in an effort to protect the environment.

“In this almost cult-like climate movement she experienced, discussions can veer towards radical thoughts, including self-harm,” Biggers notes. “It’s troubling. I don’t think people truly grasp their mindset,” she explains during a chat with Ally Beth Stucky.

Biggers believes that offering a broader historical context might help those feeling trapped by these radical ideas. She emphasizes the improvements in human life, pointing out that technology derived from fossil fuels allows for much more comfortable lives. “Even the wealthiest in the 1700s didn’t enjoy the comforts we do today,” she adds.

She reflects on how women in areas lacking access to fossil fuels often spend hours gathering fuel for cooking. “I choose to convert some of that guilt into gratitude,” Biggers expresses thoughtfully.
