ExxonMobil’s Supply Insights Amid Middle East Tensions
ExxonMobil’s CEO, Darren Woods, has stated that the global oil market is currently equipped to handle potential disruptions in Iran’s oil exports. He mentioned that there is sufficient spare capacity to compensate for any loss of Iranian oil, particularly if the export routes through the Strait of Hormuz are impacted.
Woods noted that the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Iran has raised concerns for the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key transit route for oil. He discussed the situation during a special report on Fox News.
Iran’s production stands at around 3.3 million barrels per day, with about 1.6 million barrels exported, making up less than 2% of global demand. Moreover, the Strait of Hormuz plays a vital role, with an average of 20 million barrels per day flowing through it, constituting roughly 20% of the world’s liquid oil consumption. Notably, if this route becomes inaccessible, alternatives for oil transportation are quite limited.
Recent military actions by the Israeli Defense Force, targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, have caused a spike in oil prices. The price of West Texas Intermediate crude rose to $72 per barrel amid these developments. Woods expressed that any disruption of Iranian oil, while a concern, isn’t seen as intentional sabotage of the oil supply chain.
The potential loss of Iranian oil could lead to an increase of approximately $7.50 per barrel; however, if exports through the Strait of Hormuz are curtailed, prices could soar to $100. Woods pointed out that Iranian retaliation could involve attacks on oil tankers in transit to the U.S., which could further complicate the situation and impact prices.
Additionally, Israeli airstrikes reportedly hit Iranian oil facilities, including the Sharrei Refinery, which processes 225,000 barrels per day. Iran has a total of 11 refineries with a combined capacity of about 2.5 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, Israeli assets, such as the Haifa refinery, also faced missile strikes, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
