F1 history: Ozzy Osbourne's conversation with Martin Brundle remains memorable 22 years later

Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic singer and a key figure in the heavy metal genre, who also gained fame as a reality TV personality, passed away on Monday at the age of 76. He had publicly shared his battle with a health condition since 2003.

Tributes poured in from around the world, including heartfelt messages from the sports community. The New England Patriots, who have famously played “Crazy Train” at their games for years, expressed their sorrow on social media.

Osbourne’s death also brought to mind a memorable moment from the 2003 Canadian Grand Prix, involving former racer Martin Brundle, who had established himself as a renowned broadcaster with his “gridwalk” segments.

During one of these segments, Brundle asked Osbourne about his wife, Sharon, and the metal star brightly engaged, discussing a “Rasputin Musical” project he was developing. But then Brundle humorously asked, “Did you bring the dog?” to which Osbourne replied, “No, they’re all at home.” After that, Brundle deftly shifted gears to another topic.

Years later, Brundle would reflect on that moment as one of his favorites from his gridwalks. “Ozzy Osbourne in Montreal,” he recalled in 2021, describing how Osbourne provided a lengthy, somewhat indecipherable answer and how he got into a bit of trouble for not anticipating Osbourne’s candidness.

Osbourne’s last performance was during Black Sabbath’s farewell concert on July 5th.
