Falcons Defeat Vikings 22-6
This week, JJ McCarthy’s second NFL start didn’t bring the same late-game heroics as last week. The Atlanta Falcons took down the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 22-6.
McCarthy had pulled off a thrilling win against the Bears the previous Monday, but faced a tougher challenge on “Sunday Night Football.” While he had opportunities, finishing the game with 158 passing yards and two interceptions, he struggled to find his rhythm. The Vikings’ run game faltered, and McCarthy fell victim to a relentless Falcons defense that sacked him six times.
On the other side of the field, Michael Penix Jr. also had a rough outing. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 135 yards, failing to score. There were moments when he could have connected for touchdowns, but he missed those chances before the Falcons secured a win with a late score from Tyler Allgeier.
Allgeier’s five-yard touchdown run was the only one of the game, as both teams battled through a series of field goal attempts, making it hard to capitalize in the red zone. The Falcons’ new kicker, Parker Romo, initially struggled but managed to convert his longest attempts, including a 54-yarder.
The Falcons’ running game was anchored by Bijan Robinson, who led all players with 143 rushing yards on 22 carries. Drake London was the leading receiver for Atlanta with 49 yards. For the Vikings, Justin Jefferson managed to gather 81 yards but only had three receptions. After one of McCarthy’s interceptions on the Vikings’ final drive, Jefferson appeared visibly frustrated on the sidelines, a reaction familiar to many who have faced tough games.
McCarthy and the Vikings now look to improve their consistency as they prepare to meet the Cincinnati Bengals next week, who might be without quarterback Joe Burrow due to a toe injury.
This upcoming match will surely be a test for both teams, as they aim for better performances after this week’s struggles.
