Falcons appoint Matt Ryan as head of football operations as team restructuring starts

Matt Ryan Appointed President of Football Operations for Falcons

On Saturday, Matt Ryan was officially named the Falcons’ president of football operations.

This marks a full-circle moment for the franchise legend who has spent nearly his entire NFL career with the team. Previously, he held a position as a CBS NFL analyst.

Ryan’s return to the organization was anticipated since late December when reports indicated discussions between him and Falcons owner Arthur Blank regarding a significant role in the front office.

“Matt’s leadership, attention to detail, and deep understanding of the game contributed to his success as our most accomplished player during his remarkable 14 years with the Falcons,” Blank stated. “I believe these same traits will greatly benefit our organization in this new capacity. His ongoing commitment to studying the game—both as a player and an analyst—gives him a nuanced understanding of today’s NFL and our specific organization, which is invaluable.”

Ryan will take on the responsibility of hiring a new head coach and general manager after the Falcons recently parted ways with former coach Raheem Morris and former general manager Terry Fontenot following their last game of the season.

“About 20 years ago, Arthur gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, and he did it again today,” Ryan commented. “While I appreciate my experiences with the Colts and CBS, I’ve always been a Falcon. It’s wonderful to be back home. I couldn’t be more excited or humbled by this opportunity. My commitment to the success of this franchise is unwavering, and I’m prepared to help write a new chapter in our pursuit of excellence.”

Drafted third overall in 2008, Ryan spent 14 seasons with the Falcons before his last season in the league with the Colts. After retiring in 2022, he took on the analyst role, which he held until now.

This past season, the Falcons finished with an 8-9 record and are looking to recover from a playoff drought that has lasted eight years, marking the longest such streak in the NFC.
