Atlanta Falcons Move On From Head Coach and GM
The Atlanta Falcons made a swift decision regarding their future right after their season wrapped up last Sunday.
They didn’t wait for the traditional day known as Black Monday to part ways with head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, making the change on Sunday night.
Morris was initially brought on ahead of the 2024 season, chosen over notable candidates like Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, Mike McDonald, and Ben Johnson.
However, Morris’s tenure did not live up to expectations, as the team finished with an 8-9 record for two consecutive seasons.
“While I have a personal appreciation for both Raheem and Terry and recognize their hard work and commitment to the team, I think we need new leadership going forward,” said Falcons owner Arthur Blank in a statement. He added, “This decision wasn’t easy, and it’s hard to move on from people who embody our organization and its values. But, frankly, the results just didn’t match the expectations of our fans, coaches, or ourselves. We sincerely wish them the best in their future endeavors.”
The team’s performance was disappointing, especially since they finished with an identical record to the division-winning Carolina Panthers. They were just one victory short of making the playoffs for the first time since 2017. For instance, their game against the New York Jets had significant implications—had the Falcons won, the Jets would have ended up with the No. 1 overall pick instead of No. 2 in the draft.
Despite winning their last four games, it wasn’t enough to save Morris or Fontenot.
Morris came to the Falcons after a stint as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, where he contributed to a Super Bowl victory. He had also worked in various roles with the Falcons and even served as interim head coach in 2020.
He took over from Arthur Smith, who had been the head coach for three seasons and is now the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers could advance to the playoffs with a win over the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.
One can’t help but wonder if the Falcons might regret their choice of Morris over other candidates. For instance, Vrabel clinched the AFC East in his first year with the Patriots, Johnson emerged as a winner in the NFC North with the Bears, and Harbaugh guided the Chargers back into the playoffs.
The Falcons will be looking for new leadership as they hope to maximize the talent of Michael Penix Jr., who is set to start his third NFL season in September.
