Falcons fire Jimmy Lake and Jay Rodgers in defensive upheaval

The NFL-wide coaching turmoil continued Saturday, with the Falcons announcing the firing of two coaches: defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rogers.

The move came after Atlanta missed the postseason and Lake spent just one season at his new position.

He follows Rams head coach Raheem Morris, who served as defensive coordinator.

“After a thorough evaluation of the season and careful consideration of the future of our team, we have determined that these actions are necessary,” Coach Morris said of both dismissals in a release. “From a human perspective, these decisions are never easy. We wish Jimmy, Jay, and their family the best.”

In Morris' first season as coach, Atlanta went 8 wins, 9 losses, and missed the postseason, marking the seventh consecutive year the team had a losing streak and missed the playoffs.

Much of the team's attention during the regular season was on Kirk Cousins, who sat on the bench for the final three weeks due to rookie Michael Penix Jr.

Despite Penix's performance, Atlanta dropped two of those games as the Buccaneers won the NFC South.

The Falcons will now search for their fourth defensive coordinator in the past five seasons.
