Pentagon Responds to Hazardous Materials Incident
UPDATE: 11:32 AM: Sean Parnell, the Pentagon spokesperson, has confirmed that there is “no hazard” present at the building, despite earlier concerns about a “hazardous materials incident.”
“This morning, occupants of the Pentagon were alerted to a potential air quality issue, which led to immediate safety precautions,” Parnell announced on Thursday via X. “Subsequent testing confirmed that no hazard exists, and normal operations have resumed,” he added.
Earlier in the morning, Arlington Fire and EMS reported that its Hazardous Materials Team was working at the Pentagon, collaborating with the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s (PFPA) Hazmat Team in response to the incident.
According to CNN, which cited three sources and the fire department, several floors were locked down and some evacuated due to the situation. There were initial reports of a malfunctioning sensor that may have indicated the presence of anthrax, based on information from first responder communications.
“We sincerely thank the first responders for their prompt actions to ensure everyone’s safety,” Parnell continued.
8:33 AM: Multiple floors of the Pentagon were reported on lockdown and evacuations were underway due to the “hazardous materials incident,” as per CNN.
The sources involved included officials familiar with the matter and local fire department representatives. Arlington Fire and Emergency Medical Services mentioned on social media that their Hazardous Materials Team was assisting the PFPA Hazmat Team during this incident.
Sean Parnell confirmed that there had been indications of an air quality issue, prompting precautionary measures until a clearer picture could be established. According to CNN, he stated, “The Department is following standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the impacted area. Response teams are ready to assist building occupants.”
Captain Jamie Jill, from the Arlington County Fire Department, mentioned that they are supporting the PFPA’s hazardous materials team during this situation. Some sources indicated that floors two through five in certain corridors had been locked down, with police observed wearing gas masks and protective gear.
