Families of trans teens file lawsuit against New Hampshire officials over sports ban

The families of two transgender teenage girls in New Hampshire have filed a lawsuit challenging a new state law that bans them from playing on girls’ sports teams at their public high schools.

Parker Tyrrell, 15, and Iris Turmell, 14, have identified as girls since they were young and have both been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a distressing feeling that comes from a discrepancy between the sex assigned to them at birth and their gender identity.

The lawsuit argues that New Hampshire’s law violates constitutional protections and federal law because it denies teens equal educational opportunities and discriminates against them because they are transgender.

Republican Gov. Chris Sununu signed a bill last month that he said was widely supported, called the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which goes into effect next week. Nearly half the country has laws that impose restrictions on transgender people in women’s and girls’ sports. The law states that athletes must play based on the sex on their birth certificate.

Tyrrell, who will be a 10th grader at Plymouth Regional High School this year, played on the girls soccer team in ninth grade and said she is looking forward to starting practicing with the team again ahead of their first game on Aug. 30.

“I feel freest and happiest when I’m playing soccer with my teammates. Win or lose, we support each other,” Tyrrell said in a statement. “Not being able to play on a team with other girls makes me feel isolated from many of my friends and makes school a much harder experience.”

“I am a transgender girl. I have known that my whole life and everyone knows I am a girl,” Turmel said in a statement. “I don’t understand why I should not be given the same opportunities as other girls at school.”

The lawsuit was filed the same day that the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to deny the Biden administration’s emergency request to enforce parts of the new rules, including discrimination protections for transgender students under Title IX.
