Maryland Family Faces Fines Over Christmas Decorations

A family in Maryland is contending with a $50-per-day fine due to their Christmas decorations allegedly infringing on their homeowners association’s (HOA) nuisance rules. Pahan Salgado stated that the penalties could total up to $650, with the possibility of further charges. The decorations include various lights, a Nutcracker figure, and a Nativity scene. Salgado emphasized that the holiday season represents a time to reflect on Christian values, noting that their decorations are a meaningful way to celebrate. “Christmas is really special for everyone,” he remarked.

Salgado expressed that the family’s ornaments are not a disturbance. “We’re not bothering anyone. We don’t disturb the neighbors, and our lights are limited to our property boundaries. It’s just a few lights in the bushes. It’s not like we’re causing chaos,” he stated. Interestingly, he mentioned that other neighbors have similar decorations without facing fines. “There are others with Nativity scenes, yet we’re the only ones being singled out,” he added.

Despite Salgado’s assertions, the family received a letter from an attorney representing the Middlebrook Manor South HOA, indicating they had violated the nuisance regulations. Neighbors denied any issues with the decorations and no one else received fines.

When approached for comment, the HOA’s attorney, who chose to remain unnamed, reiterated the association’s commitment to a safe and respectful atmosphere within the community. They clarified that the aim is to enforce governing documents evenly in line with Maryland law but did not elaborate on specific incidents or homeowners.

The Salgado family is recognized in their neighborhood for their festive displays aimed at spreading joy. Earlier this November, they organized a free Christmas lights event at their home, utilizing donations collected for local food banks. They also hosted a Halloween-themed event in October, continuing their community-engaged spirit.
