A California court has valued the life of 23-year-old Beth Buchanan, a cherished individual from Fresno, at $56.5 million in a wrongful death lawsuit linked to a drunk driving incident.

Buchanan was tragically killed in February 2023 by a driver going the wrong way while she was taking her mother to the airport. A ruling by a Georgia judge confirmed that her family would receive compensation for their loss.

The individual responsible, Cesar Loudares Macias, has yet to be captured and faces serious charges including vehicular homicide. The U.S. Marshals Service is actively searching for him and has offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Friends and family painted a heartfelt picture of Buchanan during the proceedings. “She was a light,” the ruling noted, emphasizing the recurring theme in stories shared about her. One person even described her as “golden.”

At the time of her death, Buchanan was pursuing a doctorate at the University of Georgia. Described as a standout student, she had options from several Ivy League schools but chose Rice University, which she felt was her “happy place.”

Her enthusiasm for learning was well-recognized. The ruling quoted sentiments from those close to her, noting she viewed education as akin to attending a birthday party where you get to bring home gifts, highlighting her ongoing excitement for knowledge.

Buchanan’s family, including her parents and partner, provided testimony and letters to support her character in court.

The awarded amount reflects her expected lifespan of 56.5 years, but her family emphasized that this ruling serves more as a formal acknowledgment of her life rather than a mere financial settlement.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of Beth,” her family stated. “This award is symbolic and shouldn’t be seen as compensation. No financial sum can ever replace our daughter or fill the void she created.”

Macias remains at large, with ongoing investigations into the incident involving the death of Buchanan, who was killed in the DUI-related crash.

The U.S. Marshals are requesting anyone with information about Macias to reach out at 1-877-926-8332.
