The family attorney for 24-year-old Gaia Costa, who tragically lost her life after being struck by a BMW SUV driven by the wife of Lufthansa’s CEO, expressed that they feel “destroyed” by the incident in Sardinia.
Costa, a babysitter, was using the pedestrian crosswalk in Porto Cervo, a posh beach town in Northern Italy, when she was hit, according to local media reports.
Sardinian authorities state that 51-year-old Vivian Alexandra Spohr was driving the vehicle and only stopped after being confronted by bystanders.
About 200 paramedics and medical personnel reportedly attempted to revive Costa for 20 minutes, but she succumbed to severe head injuries.
Vivian Spohr has conveyed her sadness and regret over the accident through her lawyer, Angelo Merlini, as reported to La Repubblica.
After the tragic event, Spohr returned to Germany, and authorities are currently investigating the incident. She is not legally obligated to remain in Italy and is cooperating with the investigation.
“Right now, we need to honor the suffering of our families who have been shattered,” stated Antonero Dezini, the attorney representing Costa’s family. Her father is a prominent member of a significant Italian union.
Dezini emphasized his clients’ trust in the work being done by the Tempio Prosecutor’s office.
A witness noted that Costa had raised her hands in an effort to stop the car that hit her, trying to attract Spohr’s attention as she ran after a group of men.
An autopsy is planned for Wednesday. Reports indicate that the investigation might be slowed down as all documents from Spohr are required to be translated into German.
