Doug Martin’s Family Speaks Out After His Death

The family of All-Pro NFL running back Doug Martin has shared their thoughts following his death while in police custody, revealing that he struggled with mental health issues.

Brian Murphy, who was Martin’s former agent and now serves as CEO of Athletes First, released a statement on behalf of the family to clarify the events surrounding his death. According to a report, Martin had been facing significant challenges related to his mental health, which affected both his personal and professional life.

“Ultimately, the one thing Doug couldn’t escape was his mental illness,” the statement noted.

Martin was arrested on a Saturday in Oakland after police responded to a report of a robbery. Around the same time, dispatchers received information indicating that the suspect was experiencing a “medical emergency.” There was reportedly a brief struggle before Martin became unresponsive in custody.

Paramedics arrived, and the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 36. The Oakland police have confirmed his death.

As stated by the family, “Doug’s parents actively sought medical assistance and support from local authorities.” They indicated that, feeling overwhelmed, Martin left his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s house, where he was subsequently taken into custody.

The family also mentioned that an investigation is currently underway concerning the circumstances of his time in custody.

Initially drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the 31st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Martin quickly made a name for himself, earning Pro Bowl selections in his rookie year and achieving All-Pro status in 2015. After spending six seasons with Tampa Bay, he concluded his career with a final season at the Oakland Raiders.

Authorities have not yet shared additional details regarding the incident. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that an autopsy will take place. Meanwhile, the family has requested privacy as they navigate this unexpected and tragic loss.
