Tragic Death of Cowboys Player Marshawn Kneeland

The family of Marshawn Kneeland expressed their heartbreak following the Cowboys defensive player’s suicide. The 24-year-old was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police chase on Wednesday night.

“We are devastated by this tremendous loss and are still processing our deepest grief,” said Nicole Kneeland-Woods. She shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, describing her brother as a significant presence on the Dallas Cowboys field and an even more cherished individual off it. “Marshawn was kind, determined, humble, and loving. His light shined brightly in every life he touched, and his spirit lives on in the countless hearts he inspired,” she added.

Kneeland participated in 17 snaps during the Cowboys’ recent game, even scoring a touchdown through a blocked punt in their 27-17 loss. His unexpected death has triggered an outpouring of support from fans and friends worldwide.

In their statement, the family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love during this tough time. They requested privacy as they come together to honor Marshawn’s life and legacy. This comes as a second tragedy for the family; Kneeland’s mother, Wendy, passed away in March 2024, reportedly due to a drug overdose.

In observance of his memory, the Broncos held a moment of silence before their Thursday night game against the Raiders. His teammates, visibly shaken, shared their emotional reactions. “It was a very tough day…we started getting the news early,” quarterback Dak Prescott recounted. “I’m hurting for Marshawn. I’m hurting for his family. I’m hurting for his girlfriend,” he said, highlighting the collective pain among teammates.

“This is a pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” Prescott continued. “Marshawn wishes he didn’t have to go through what he went through. We need to appreciate every moment and hold each other close.”
