Emotional Incident Involves Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte
During a recent game, Arizona Diamondbacks player Ketel Marte faced an unfortunate and painful scenario when fans at the home field of the Chicago White Sox made insensitive comments regarding his late mother. The Diamondbacks won that game 4-1.
A 22-year-old fan later acknowledged that he provoked Marte and expressed regret over his actions. Marte, who is 31, became visibly emotional, shedding tears due to the comments about his mother, Elpidia Valdez, who tragically lost her life in a car accident in the Dominican Republic back in 2017.
Major League Baseball (MLB) commended the Chicago White Sox for promptly addressing the situation by removing the fans involved. However, specific details regarding what was said to Marte were not disclosed by MLB when queried.
The following day, as the Diamondbacks faced the White Sox again, the home team displayed a supportive message on the scoreboard during the first inning to rally behind Marte, stating, “Baseball is family. The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte.”
Diamondbacks manager Tory Lovullo showed support by comforting Marte during a pitching change in the seventh inning, wrapping an arm around him in a moment of solidarity. Lovullo described the incident as a “terrible moment,” expressing frustration at the fans’ overreached behavior. He revealed that witnessing Marte’s tears felt quite painful, almost like seeing a family member hurt.
Furthermore, after the game, Diamondbacks shortstop Gerald Perdomo called for the banning of such fans from future games, stating that this kind of behavior should not be tolerated within Major League Baseball.
Marte, however, chose to refrain from commenting on the incident through team representatives. On the field, he managed to seal a victory with a solo home run, marking his first such achievement of the season and helping his team take an early lead.
Overall, Marte has played in 52 games this season, boasting an impressive performance with a batting average that includes 14 home runs and 31 RBIs.
