Unique Incident at WNBA Game Leads to Ejection
A peculiar turn of events unfolded during a WNBA game that left fans bewildered and led to an unusual interruption. This happened on Sunday at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C., during a match between the Washington Mystics and the Phoenix Mercury.
It was the third quarter when a bizarre situation unfolded. Former WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper made a dash around a pick near the opposing bench. Teammate Alyssa Thomas urged the referee to halt the timeout, bringing the game to a standstill.
“I think the fans said something that caught the attention of the Phoenix Mercury, but apparently, they weren’t happy with what they heard,” a commentator noted.
As the drama unfolded, it became apparent that Copper was in distress. Her sizable braided wig had fallen to the court, much to the surprise of both fans and announcers, who quickly picked up on it.
Jade Melbourne, a guard from the Mystics, was spotted quickly grabbing the fallen wig from Copper. It’s unclear, though, if this was a planned move or purely instinctive.
Following this incident, Copper was seen hurriedly making her way to the locker room, clutching the wig above her head. The break in play extended longer as Mercury players voiced complaints to the officiating crew.
The commentary team attempted to provide explanations but seemed to navigate the situation delicately. One commentator caught snippets of a conversation between the referee and arena staff, mentioning the players felt mocked due to the on-court incident.
In further commentary, it was mentioned, “The fans said something to the Mercury, but they clearly didn’t take it well—there’s some retaliation here.”
As reported, security officials moved to the Mercury bench, responding to player concerns, resulting in some fans being escorted out of the arena. Their ejection came just a couple of weeks after a similar incident occurred at a different game between the Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun.
In that game, a fan was removed after making remarks directed toward Sun player Sanya Rivers. Rivers addressed the issue post-game, refusing to disclose what was said but indicated it was inappropriate. “I don’t think I need to elaborate, but I can assure you, if it’s threatening in any form, then you should be out,” she stated.
While the drama was certainly a spectacle, the Mercury ultimately triumphed over the Mystics, winning the game with a score of 88-72.
