Perez Ties Record with Historic Home Run

A Royals fan was perhaps a bit too enthusiastic about Salvador Perez’s latest achievement.

During the seventh inning of the Royals’ narrow 5-4 victory over the Giants, Perez hit his 317th career home run, which tied him with George Brett for the most home runs in the team’s history.

The ball traveled an impressive 437 feet, landing in the right-center fountain at Kauffman Stadium. This prompted some fans to leap into the water in a bid to retrieve the historic home run ball.

Shortly thereafter, security removed one particularly eager fan from the stadium, and he was taken into custody by the police. Other attendees captured images of this scene as police escorted the fan away.

As stated on the Royals’ official website, jumping into the fountain can lead to arrest. Their rules clearly lay out that anyone who attempts such a stunt will be prosecuted.

Perez later commented on the situation, humorously urging the police to let the man go home. “If it were me, I might have done the same thing,” he mused. “Please, and thank you for your hard work in getting the ball.” He expressed his joy over tying the franchise record in front of the Kansas City crowd.

“It was such an exhilarating moment,” Perez shared. “I really appreciate the support from the fans here. Kansas City feels like home to me.” Having spent all 15 years of his MLB career with the Royals, he has truly become the face of the franchise.

With a repertoire that includes nine All-Star selections, multiple Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards, and being named the World Series MVP in 2015, Perez has solidified his legacy.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro praised Perez’s dedication, saying, “The passion he brings to the game is unmatched. He’s a true Hall of Famer.” I mean, you can just feel the love and energy he adds to the team.
