Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will skip Sunday’s first debate ahead of early voting in the Democratic primary and instead host a “self-care fair” for crime victims, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. It was reported that he had chosen to do so.
Willis’ absence forced Democratic challenger Christian Wise Smith to debate from an empty podium on Fox 5 Atlanta. report. Willis appointed his girlfriend, Nathan Wade, to lead the case against former President Donald Trump and paid him for vacation time they took together, but did not grant the defendant’s request for disqualification. He was harshly criticized by Judge Scott McAfee in his March ruling. Willis asked Wade to resign.
During the debate, Smith did not explicitly say he would stop filing lawsuits if Trump were elected, but Willis emphasized that “we should do things differently.”
“When you pay one lawyer nearly $1 million to handle a case, the rest of us are left vulnerable,” Smith said. Said Contracts obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation reveal indirect references to Mr. Wade, who was paid more by Mr. Willis than the state’s top extortion expert. “It hurts everyone in Fulton County.”
Willis gave Wade a $250-an-hour contract, but Georgia’s top extortion expert, John Floyd, makes only $200 an hour, DCNF previously reported. Her firm also handed over the contract to Wade’s law partner.
“I worked for that firm and my salary was significantly less than what the attorney was being paid,” Smith continued. “And I think he was responsible for handling more cases than just one.”
The defendants are appealing McAfee’s decision and continue to seek Willis’ disbarment.(Related article: Fani Willis asks appeals court not to reconsider ruling that stays in Trump case)

“Hey, Mr. Willis, how are you doing?” My question is, where are you? ” Smith once asked an empty podium. “You know, I’m here worrying about the residents and families of Fulton County, but you may have attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, you may have attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, you may have attended fundraisers throughout the county. I understand that there may be, but what about us in Fulton County?” ”
Willis and Wade said in testimony that they split the costs roughly evenly and that she repaid him in cash. Although both men claimed the relationship didn’t begin until Wade was hired, a longtime friend of Willis’s testified that the relationship began in 2019.
McAfee found in March that there was a “reasonable doubt” whether Willis and Wade “testified truthfully about the timing of their relationship.”
