Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Thursday denounced critics, saying she is the victim of ongoing attacks as she prosecutes former President Trump for allegedly trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
“I’m a black woman who has been attacked and hyper-sexualized,” she said in a speech at a church in Atlanta. “Look, I’m tired of hearing these idiots call me ‘Fanny’ to humiliate me because, like some stupid schoolboy, it makes me think of a woman’s ass, her butt.”
The remark was seen as a dig at Trump, who in March at an Ohio rally called the prosecutor “Fanny, your asshole” when he mentioned her by name.
The case against Trump was derailed by an investigation into whether Willis should be fired because of her romantic relationship with the special counsel. Efforts to have Willis disqualified ended when the prosecutor agreed to step aside from the case. continuing to the Georgia Court of Appeals.
Willis said at the church on Thursday that while those close to her have expressed concern for her in the wake of the attack, she is not upset.
“My message here is to not care about the insults being leveled at me. I promise you I don’t care,” she said. “I’m too busy working 15-hour days trying to use all of my God-given talents to fulfill my God-given mission.”
Prosecutors also appear to be going after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who has been demanding records for months while accusing Willis of wrongdoing.
“We have politicians who don’t spend time doing what they were elected to do,” Willis said. “In fact, we have a clown in Washington, D.C., who was elected to do what he wanted: to keep our communities safe and to pass laws. But he’s been sitting there for 17 years and hasn’t passed a single law.”
Questions about Willis’ relationship and attempts to remove her from Trump’s lawsuit have completely stalled the case, making it unlikely that a trial will take place before the November election.
