Fani Willis — the Georgia prosecutor who aggressively went after Trump — overwhelmingly wins re-election

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor who prosecuted former President Donald Trump, won re-election in an overwhelming way.

Willis, a prominent Democratic incumbent, defeated Republican challenger Courtney Cramer on Tuesday. Willis easily lost Kramer has a staggering lead of about 68% to 32%.

Lawyers for Mr. Trump have asked that Mr. Willis and Nathan Wade be removed from the case, saying their “personal relationship” appears to be a conflict of interest.

Fulton County is a Democratic stronghold that includes most of Atlanta and accounts for 11% of the state's voters.

Mr. Cramer served as an intern in the White House Counsel's Office during the Trump administration and is active in Republican activist groups.

Willis won the 2021 election by defeating his former boss, District Attorney Paul Howard, in the primary. She was not challenged by Republicans in that election.

Willis rose to prominence by launching an investigation into Trump. Willis' office indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants in August 2023 on felony charges related to their alleged attempt to overturn Georgia's 2020 election results.

Four people pleaded guilty after reaching plea deals with prosecutors.

Mr. Willis used the RICO Act as a weapon to go after Mr. Trump and his allies.

Trump and the other defendants have pleaded not guilty in the case.

But Trump's lawyers have asked that Willis be removed from the case, saying he appears to have a conflict of interest.personal relationshipand the special prosecutor she hired, Nathan Wade.

The Georgia Court of Appeals has scheduled oral arguments in the Willis case against Trump for Dec. 5.

willis said After serving three terms as district attorney, she hopes to pursue a teaching position at her undergraduate alma mater, Howard University in Washington, DC.
