Fans of Motown icon Gladys Knight have expressed their worries following her recent performances, where she appeared disoriented and confused. Various videos have made the rounds on social media, including a clip from TMZ that shows Knight standing with her back turned to the audience during a rendition of “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Reports indicate that those involved in her tour are describing the situation as “tragic,” hinting at the possibility that she may be compelled to perform against her will.
In the past few months, Knight has been on a solo tour for some shows and partnered with Smokey Robinson for others. Many fans felt particularly alarmed by her performance at the Hollywood Bowl on July 25.
Sources close to Knight mentioned that her Las Vegas tour in April raised serious concerns, with indications of dementia becoming noticeable. One source described it as “shameful” to continue having her perform in such a state.
Online comments from fans reflected a sense of frustration over her situation. One user expressed, “She should not be on anyone’s tour or stage. Let her relax and enjoy the rest of her life.” Another fan stated, “Have some respect and take Ms. Knight off the stage. It’s sad to see her struggling and confused. Please stop this!!!”
Recently, Knight performed at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California, at the age of 82. Her husband and manager, William McDowell, shared with TMZ that Knight experiences “good days and bad.” He added, “No one is gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing.”
McDowell clarified that Knight has not received a formal diagnosis of dementia but plans to consult a doctor soon to evaluate any concerns. He mentioned he’ll be observing her performance on September 5 to decide whether future shows, scheduled through November, should be canceled. Additionally, he is in the process of developing a facility near their North Carolina home to allow Knight to perform without the stress of travel.
In a statement relayed to TMZ, Knight expressed, “After much soul searching, I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life.”
She continued, “I’ll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.” Knight also took a moment to thank her fans for their unwavering support throughout her nearly 75-year career. “Thank you for making a little girl’s dream come true,” she said.
