PHILLIES PODCASTERS REACT TO BIChette’S METS SIGNING
On Friday, Phillies podcasters were taken by surprise to find out that Bo Bichette had inked a deal with the Mets.
While recording a podcast about Bichette’s potential as a free agent, hosts Jamie Lynch and Tyler Zurich were interrupted by a staff member delivering the news of the infielder’s stunning three-year contract worth $126 million with the Mets. Their reaction was one of sheer shock.
After some excited yellings and a brief moment of silence, Lynch posed a question about where Bichette would fit in the Mets’ infield.
“Why did they [Marcus] Semien, [Francisco] Lindor, [Mark] Vientos,” Lynch mused, pointing out that the Mets’ infield is shaping up to be quite solid next season.
Breaking the silence, both Lynch and Zurich shouted, “What the hell!” at the camera in disbelief.
Zuri suggested that Bichette could take on various roles in the infield, noting, “He’s not going to DH. He’ll play a little bit everywhere, right?”
Interestingly, Bichette, at 27 years old, is reportedly expected to play third base in Queens, even though he hasn’t played that position professionally thus far, as reported by journalist Jon Heyman.
The podcasters were particularly astonished, considering the Phillies had initially been seen as one of the prime candidates to sign Bichette.
Earlier in January, Heyman had mentioned that there seemed to be mutual interest between Bichette and the Phillies following their discussions about a potential deal.
Additionally, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale suggested that the Phillies appeared to be the front-runners to sign the two-time All-Star, hinting that teams like the Yankees and Mets were also vying for outfielder Cody Bellinger.
However, the situation took a quick turn when the Phillies, after missing out on Bichette, opted instead to secure three-time All-Star catcher JT Realmuto with a three-year, $45 million contract on the same day.
