A man who experienced a serious fall at PNC Park shared some thoughts for the first time since the incident on April 30.
Kavan Markwood mentioned to Triblive on Wednesday that he is “alright,” even though he described his condition as having “broken everything” from the fall.
“I really can’t sleep. I have a lot of back pain,” he shared.
Markwood’s fall occurred during a game between the Pirates and the Cubs, after which he was hospitalized at Allegheny General Hospital.
He indicated that he would discuss more about his situation after spending about a week in the hospital.
“When I get home, I think I’ll just put ice on it,” Markwood said regarding his recovery.
Dr. Alan Philp, the Chief Medical Officer at Allegheny General Hospital, provided an update on Markwood’s status, stating he was doing well.
“He’s now at the point where he’s off the breathing machine,” Philp explained. “He’s out of intensive care and is ready to move on to the next step, which is physical therapy,” he noted.
Markwood’s sister, Tallinn, expressed her gratitude for the support that their family has received since the incident, sharing that her brother had begun to walk again.
“I’m very grateful that he’s still here,” she commented.
A recently released video captured from stadium security showed Markwood leaping to celebrate a play before collapsing, hitting the handrail and falling.
Following the incident, Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting expressed his sorrow over the accident in a statement.
“We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the horrific accident that happened,” he stated. “It was one of the most difficult moments that many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated. Pirates baseball is a community; our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support each other, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.” He also acknowledged the efforts of the first responders who provided immediate care.
