Fans ridicule NBA and ABC for displaying 'CGI' trophies on the Finals court

Nail on the Head: NBA’s Digital Trophy Sparks Reactions

During Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the NBA and ABC stirred up quite a conversation on social media. They decided to digitally place images of the Larry O’Brien trophy on the court. Interestingly, fans were already buzzing about it, especially since there were no decals in Game 1, neither digital nor physical.

It’s somewhat disappointing to note that the league hasn’t used physical decals on the court since 2020, and the last time a physical trophy was displayed was back in 2009. However, this latest digital attempt didn’t exactly win over the fans.

One Twitter user pointed out, “ESPN’s broadcast included a digital trophy replaced by a digital NBA Finals logo, and frankly, it was just lackluster.” There seemed to be a feeling that the Finals should have a bit more charm, as one fan mentioned, “It would be nice if you could at least put your logo back on the court.”

Another fan echoed this sentiment, saying the overlapping digital images might not have been the best answer to fan requests for more visual elements during the Finals. A simple digital trophy, drawn poorly, hardly felt like a fitting representation. “The NBA appears to be aware that fans want more, but this isn’t it,” another commenter tweeted.

Some reactions took on a lighter tone too. “Lmaoo, Adam Silver just dropped a CGI trophy logo on the Finals Court,” quipped one fan. This highlights how, despite the criticisms, there’s still a playful side to the fandom when things don’t go as expected.

Interestingly, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reflected on the matter, admitting he didn’t really consider the social media noise until he actually saw it himself. He mentioned a sense of nostalgia that comes with the event’s visuals and hopes they can keep the trophy’s significance special.

Following all the discussions around Game 2, it’ll be interesting to see if Silver decides to make any changes before Game 3. As for the game itself, the Thunder took Game 2 with a score of 123-107, making the series tied at 1-1.
