Outrage Follows Fatal Accident Involving Illegal Immigrant
Lawmakers are expressing their anger as the family and friends of a college soccer player and his girlfriend mourn their tragic deaths. The couple was killed in a drunk driving incident allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant.
This incident has stirred up a renewed conversation about immigration policies and whether lapses in enforcement led to the deaths of Fletcher Harris, 20, and Skyler Provenza, 19.
On January 16, prosecutors stated that Juan Alvarado Aguilar, 37, was driving while intoxicated when his vehicle collided with the car carrying Harris and Provenza. The crash resulted in devastating injuries, leading to the deaths of both young adults. As their loved ones gathered for funerals on Thursday, lawmakers pointed to Aguilar’s immigration status and previous criminal record, calling this a reflection of significant public safety issues, demanding direct actions to prevent such incidents.
North Carolina Republican Representative Mark Harris emphasized that the situation underscores the dangerous outcomes of so-called sanctuary policies and a failure to adequately enforce immigration laws. He claimed the couple’s deaths could have been avoided and criticized local leaders for allowing dangerous individuals to remain on the streets.
Harris commented, “Fletcher Harris and Skyler Provenza—two promising young lives—were taken from us due to a head-on collision reportedly caused by someone who shouldn’t have been on our roads.” He stated that this was an example of the severe costs linked to North Carolina’s sanctuary policies and criticized the Democrats for their stance against law enforcement.
Moreover, he questioned the lack of outrage surrounding this incident, saying, “Where is the anger? Where are the protests?” according to his reflections, if the scenario had been different, there would likely be a different public reaction.
The tragic crash occurred around 11 p.m. on January 16 in Rowan County when Aguilar’s truck crossed into oncoming traffic. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. According to investigators, Aguilar exhibited noticeable signs of impairment at the time of his arrest.
Records revealed that Aguilar faced charges for impaired driving in 2020, charges that, at the time, were dismissed. This history has drawn renewed scrutiny following the fatal accident. In court, it was disclosed that Aguilar had also failed to appear at previous hearings, and had previously been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Currently, Aguilar is confronting multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter and is being held on bail exceeding $5 million.
North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall remarked that such tragedies hit home and pointed the finger at federal immigration enforcement failures. He stated, “This is a policy failure under the Biden administration that effectively allowed for open borders,” adding that some Democrats have adopted a protective stance towards immigrants, even in the case of serious offenses.
Hall further noted that North Carolina should not be seen as a sanctuary state, indicating efforts that mandate local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He referred to past legislation that required sheriffs to work with ICE, which faced opposition but was ultimately overridden by lawmakers.
Reflecting on the victims, Hall confirmed that lawmakers aim to prevent similar incidents in the future. He shared his commitment to ensuring that no one else experiences such pain. “We are fighting hard to make sure something like this never happens again,” he stated.
Harris was a celebrated student-athlete at Catawba College, while Provenza had just completed her studies in esthetics and was gearing up to start a new job.
In a moving Facebook post, Provenza’s mother appealed for love and unity in honoring the couple’s memory, urging people to remember love and justice over hatred.
The North Carolina Democratic Party was approached for commentary but has yet to respond.
