A house explosion in southern Wisconsin has left one person dead, and police said they believe a shooting reported by a neighbor was caused by ammunition stored inside the home igniting.
Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said a home exploded just outside the city of Middleton, and deputies and firefighters arrived on the scene around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
One person died and the county coroner’s office is investigating, Schaffer said Wednesday.

Images posted by local media showed the ruins of a house engulfed in flames after the explosion, with glass windows and other debris scattered nearby.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, she said. Middleton is about six miles northwest of Madison.
Schaffer said he had no additional information to release Wednesday morning.

The fire “may have caused ammunition inside the home to explode,” and some neighbors reported hearing gunshots, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
