Fatal New York crash kills 2, prompting arson investigation

Police are investigating after a fiery two-vehicle crash that killed two people and injured five others early on New Year's Day in Rochester, New York, officials said.

The accident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Monday as officers were directing traffic after a concert at the Kodak Center theater complex, according to a police statement.

The statement said the Ford Expedition collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander, causing both vehicles to “plow through a group of pedestrians who were crossing the road.”

The collision caused an explosion and a large fire that took the fire department more than an hour to extinguish.

Police are investigating after a fiery two-vehicle crash in Rochester, New York early in the new year left two people dead and five injured.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters “found at least 12 gasoline cans” in and around the Expedition, police said. Police brought in an arson team and notified the FBI, police said.

Two passengers in the Outlander died and the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the expedition was hospitalized with serious injuries. The three pedestrians who were hit were also taken to the hospital, one of them in critical condition.

Investigators asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact police.

Rochester is approximately 540 miles northwest of Manhattan.
