An FBI agent who criticized the bureau during President Donald Trump's first term was arrested Monday for sharing a message with confidential FBI documents to write a book about his time at the federal agency.
Jonathan Buma, a 15-year FBI veteran, was arrested for preparing to board an international flight at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, the arrest affidavit said.
Buma has been accused of printing around 130 files of classified FBI documents and messages, and sharing materials with associates for a book she later wrote about her career at the station.
“Book Draft included information obtained by BUMA through his position as a special FBI agent related to the FBI efforts and investigation of the foreign weapons of mass destruction (“WMD”) program,” according to court documents. “On November 2, 2023, Buma wrote emails to various personal peers to help negotiate book deals with publishers.”

In 2022, Buma began to express concern about how the department handled certain investigations to members of various government agencies, Congress and news media, according to documents.
Buma told the insider In an interview in September 2023, when he approached his boss about former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who worked in the Trump campaign, he may have been compromised in a Russian anti-impact operation, and he was shut down. When Buma previously told Superior about his alleged business dealings with Hunter Biden's Ukrainian energy company Brisma, his boss said he was “very interested.”
