Tragic Shootings Target Minnesota Politicians

A Minnesota senator and his wife were injured, while the former House Speaker and her husband lost their lives amid a series of violent, targeted attacks on politicians and their families, according to authorities.

The late Rep. Melissa Hortman, 55, had been serving her 11th term as a Democrat in the House since her election in 2004. She held the position of minority leader from 2017 to 2019 and was the Speaker of the House from 2019 until 2025. Prior to her political career, Hortman worked for Senator Algore and John Kelly, eventually going to law school.

Sadly, Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were both slain in this attack, left behind two adult children.

In her community, Hortman was noted for her extensive involvement with local organizations. She described herself as a lifelong resident and actively engaged mother and volunteer. Interestingly, she had made headlines just days earlier by being the sole House Democrat to vote for a controversial measure cutting medical insurance for illegal adult immigrants. She expressed awareness that the vote would have negative implications for people and had worked hard on a budget that didn’t include such a provision.

Earlier this year, she led House Democrats in a lengthy strike against Republicans regarding budget disputes. The day before the attack, Hortman voted against a bill to advance the budget, reflecting a persistent commitment to her principles.

In somber remarks following the tragedy, Governor Tim Walz stated, “Our state lost a great leader, and I lost a beloved friend.” He described her as someone dedicated to improving Minnesota, exuding grace and compassion.

Senator John Hoffman, 60, and his wife, Yvette, were also shot on the same day but are expected to survive. Hoffman, who has been serving in the Minnesota Senate since 2012, had a notable background as vice-chairman of the Anoka Hennepin Board of Education before his election. He chairs the Human Services Committee and holds roles on several other committees, focusing on critical state issues.

Authorities announced the name of a suspect shortly after the shootings. Vance Belter, 57, has been identified as a person of interest. Surveillance footage depicts him wearing a brown cowboy hat in the Minneapolis area shortly after the attack. A second image has emerged showing a masked individual in tactical gear outside the scene.

There’s a significant search underway, with law enforcement officials working diligently to locate Belter. They’ve recovered numerous weapons from his vehicle, alongside flyers with apparent political messages. The FBI is offering a reward of $50,000 for information leading to his capture, as he is deemed armed and dangerous.

Anyone with details regarding Belter’s whereabouts is urged to contact authorities.
