Federal agents raid 22 Minneapolis businesses in massive fraud investigation
Federal agents have launched a significant operation, raiding 22 businesses in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of an extensive fraud investigation. This action seems to be a response to allegations brought to light in a viral YouTube video by Nick Shirley, which accused certain childcare funding practices of being fraudulent. It’s worth noting that the previous Trump administration had already put a freeze on childcare funding and mandated audits for select childcare centers.
In a turn of events that has stirred up political tensions, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz faced swift criticism following his comments about the investigation. During a recent event, he suggested that the federal raid stemmed from Minnesota officials noticing and reporting irregularities.
“This operation, carried out by the FBI and the Department of Justice alongside our partners from DHS, resulted in the execution of every search warrant today. But we should really recognize our efforts to eliminate the fraud impacting Minnesota,” Walz tweeted.
His remarks gained significant attention, racking up over a million views in mere hours, but they drew harsh backlash from conservative groups. Critics pointed out that this fraud situation had unfolded while he was in office, which many believe has contributed to the pressures that led to his re-election campaign faltering.
As the back-and-forth escalated, FBI Director Kash Patel responded, seeming to imply that Walz was overstepping by taking credit for a federal initiative. “Will you come again?” he posted, hinting at Walz’s prior actions regarding the $9 billion in alleged fraud, a topic that Walz had avoided in discussions about the investigation.
Republican leaders didn’t hold back either. They echoed sentiments that Walz’s credibility was waning, pointing to a perceived inconsistency in his handling of fraud discussions versus regulations. One commentary even referred to him as an “arsonist posing as a firefighter,” encapsulating the frustrations surrounding his responses.
As federal authorities zeroed in on over 20 locations—including a childcare facility—receiving confirmation that the investigation was focused on a business primarily owned by individuals from the Somali community, it’s clear this incident is far from over.
A spokesperson from the Justice Department stated that the multifaceted operation involves law enforcement at various levels, emphasizing the seriousness with which they’re approaching “an ongoing fraud investigation.” It is also indicated that the executed search warrants were unrelated to immigration matters, clarifying any misunderstandings in that area.
