The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that it sent 274 plainclothes agents to the U.S. Capitol during the protest on January 6, 2021.
A recent article highlighted that the agency has referenced internal reports indicating these agents were “secretly deployed” and have been scrutinized in the subsequent years.
“Numerous FBI agents and staff, many from the Washington Field Office, have lodged anonymous complaints about being placed in dangerous situations without adequate safety gear or means to clearly identify themselves as officers to other law enforcement,” the article noted.
One of the recurring complaints pointed to a perception that leadership under James Comey and Chris Wray was tainted by political bias contrasting with the responses to the Summer Black Lives Matter protests.
One staff member expressed, “The FBI must communicate to its personnel and the public that, despite its evident political leanings, it remains committed to its mission and priorities. We should pursue criminal behavior without regard to race, political stance, or motivation, and we must protect all Americans uniformly, irrespective of these factors.”
The article referenced insights from senior officials, suggesting the 274 figure aligns with the FBI’s practice of embedding counter-surveillance personnel at significant events.
Earlier, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz reported that over 20 confidential human sources were present outside the Capitol during a protest in December. According to sources, the Justice Department found more than 20 such sources outside the Capitol that day.
“The FBI only assigned three confidential human sources during the protest, and the report underscored that the Bureau had not been directed to ‘break the law’ or encourage illegal activities,” the report stated.
The report further mentioned:
“Today’s report reviews the findings regarding the FBI’s confidential human sources that were in Washington, DC, on January 6th. Their presence did not permit them to enter the Capitol or restricted areas, nor were they allowed to engage in illegal activities.”
In February, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) emphasized that Americans “deserve answers” concerning the federal reaction to the events of January 6, 2021.
