FBI Ends Partnership with Southern Poverty Law Center

FBI Director Kash Patel has announced that the agency will sever its relationship with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). This marks the second time in a week that the FBI has cut ties with an organization focused on monitoring right-wing extremism.

The SPLC has dealt with various issues, including monitoring white supremacist groups, advocating for voting rights, and pursuing criminal justice reform.

However, Patel has criticized the SPLC, calling it a source of “partisan smears.” He stated, “The Southern Poverty Law Center has long abandoned its roots in civil rights work and has devolved into an entity that engages in partisan smears. Their so-called ‘maps of hatred’ have been used to malign mainstream Americans and provoke violence,” he noted on social media.

He further emphasized that the FBI does not rely on politicized or agenda-driven intelligence from external organizations.

This announcement follows Patel’s statement just two days earlier that the FBI would combat anti-Semitism while distancing itself from groups scrutinizing right-wing movements.

Like the Anti-Defamation League, the SPLC has examined the remarks of Charlie Kirk, who tragically lost his life at an event last month in Utah.

In a statement, the SPLC highlighted its 50-year commitment to addressing hatred and extremism, stating, “We have consistently shared data and analysis to safeguard civil rights and hold extremists accountable. Our mission remains to reveal hatred and advocate for the security of marginalized communities.”

The SPLC’s report on Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, noted that he promoted fears surrounding immigration and its impact on white demographics.

Kirk has alleged that Democrats are exploiting immigrants as part of a conspiracy for voter security and crime awareness, claiming that “the Americans we come from are being replaced by foreigners.” He also suggested that Trump would “free” the nation from what he described as a threatening influx of foreign individuals, according to the SPLC’s earlier report.

This situation unfolds as a White House official indicated an intent to focus on leftist groups in the wake of Kirk’s death.

Vice President Vance and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller unveiled plans to use Kirk’s passing as a motive for targeting left-wing organizations they believe contribute disproportionately to political violence.

“We are committed to utilizing all resources from the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the entire government to identify, disrupt, dismantle, and eliminate these networks, ensuring safety for all Americans,” Vance declared.

He further mentioned that there is a focus on NGOs believed to promote and engage in violence.
