Arizona Murder Suspect Apprehended in Germany
Varun Batchigari, a murder suspect from Arizona, has been arrested in Germany after reportedly fleeing the United States. He is now facing the prospect of extradition linked to the death of his girlfriend, Julissa Salazar. Legal expert and former DOJ prosecutor Jim Trusty elaborates on the complexities involved in returning Batchigari to the U.S. to face the charges, while also touching on Vice President JD Vance’s concerns about potential migrant welfare fraud.
In an interesting development, FBI Director Kash Patel has significantly ramped up direct communication with foreign partners to facilitate the return of international fugitives. According to data exclusively acquired by Fox News Digital, Patel made 100 outreach calls in his first 18 months in office, contrasting sharply with the nine calls made by his predecessor during a similar period under the Biden administration.
During Patel’s tenure, the FBI has reported a 65% increase in extraditions and a 54% rise in Foreign Transfers of Custody (FTOCs) — where fugitives are captured abroad and handed over to U.S. authorities. To date, there have been 157 extraditions and 86 FTOCs.
“When I took the helm as FBI Director, I emphasized our commitment to relentlessly pursue high-value targets abroad, and we’ve made real strides,” Patel told Fox News Digital. “These advancements are largely due to President Trump’s established relationships with foreign governments, which have opened doors for us. It also stems from Attorney General Todd Blanche’s legal guidance, which has equipped us with necessary tools to bring these individuals back to face justice.” He added, “These individuals are among the worst offenders, and we refuse to allow them any sanctuary.”
Another noteworthy case involved a Honduran man, Alexis Flores, who was extradited to Philadelphia after evading capture for 25 years following the alleged rape and murder of a young girl. Arrested in February, Flores faced previous extradition obstacles due to restrictive laws under an earlier Honduran administration.
Moreover, Zobaidul Amin, a Bangladeshi national, was extradited from Malaysia to the U.S. regarding serious charges linked to an extensive online child exploitation operation. Prosecutors claim that Amin pretended to be a teenager on social media platforms and coerced minors into producing explicit content, under threat of exposure.
Additionally, there’s the case of Abdullah Anwar, a Texas resident recently returned from Qatar to face fraud allegations. Anwar had initially fled the U.S. for Pakistan before being arrested in Qatar.
The FBI has made it a priority to secure the extradition of overseas fugitives, with Patel highlighting a noticeable increase in outreach efforts compared to former Director Christopher Wray. Patel’s 100 calls represent a striking 400% increase over Wray’s four years in office and a remarkable 1,011% jump compared to Wray’s last 18 months with the Biden administration.
Typically, the FBI collaborates with international authorities to trace and apprehend suspects. Once someone is arrested abroad, the Justice Department submits a formal request for extradition based on existing treaties. After receiving approval from the foreign government, FBI agents travel to take custody of the individual and return them to the U.S. for prosecution.
