Authorities said a witness said they saw the barrel of an AK-47 through a fence a few blocks away on Interstate 45, then saw “a man running through the brush.”Number president.
Police detained the suspect in Martin County and found an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks and a GoPro “that was intended to take pictures” near a fence.
“We currently have a possible suspect in custody,” Palm Beach authorities said.
“There is still some work to be done, but as always, we will provide information once we have booked him into the county jail and the charges he will be held on. We will also have photos and provide a history of him,” they added.
FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office, Jeffrey B. Veltri, urged the public to avoid the area for the time being.
“What is needed now is for the public to avoid the area surrounding the golf course. We, along with our partners, will continue to support this investigation with all FBI resources.”
The Secret Service said Trump was lucky to be “between 300 and 500 yards from the suspect.”
“But with a rifle and a scope, you won't get very far,” the official said.
Asked why the incident occurred, Palm Beach officials said that although it happened outside the president's presence, “the Secret Service did exactly what they were supposed to do.”
“So when someone goes into the shrubs, they’re pretty much outside. [Donald Trump] “Currently, he is not a sitting president. If he were a sitting president, this entire golf course would be surrounded. But because he is not a sitting president, security is limited to areas the Secret Service deems feasible,” they said.
“So while there will probably be a few more people around next time he's on the golf course, the Secret Service did exactly what they were supposed to do — they provided exactly the protection they were supposed to provide and their agents did an excellent job,” they continued.
After the incident, President Trump issued a statement informing the public that he was safe and thanking all those who had helped.
