Federal investigators have identified a suspect in the assassination of former President Donald Trump.
The FBI announced on Saturday that there had been an “assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump” during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The FBI offered few details during its initial press conference on the shooting Saturday night, including not naming a suspect, but the bureau did reveal the identity of the shooter early Sunday morning.
The F.B.I. press release:
The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, age 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as a suspect in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. This case remains an active investigation and anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to submit photos and videos online at: FBI.gov/Butler Or, call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
The FBI had previously noted that the suspect had no identification when he was found dead after a Secret Service sniper shot the former president, but investigators later ran a DNA test to confirm his identity, which they said was confirmed. The suspect was reportedly on the roof of the factory about an hour and a half earlier. 130 yds Away from the stage where Trump appeared.
Crooks is reportedly a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, about an hour south of Butler, where Trump’s rally was held.
After shots rang out during a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump was seen ducking down as members of the Secret Service rushed to his side and the former president was seen pumping his fists in defiance, blood coming from his ears.
“President Trump thanks the police and emergency responders for their swift action in response to this heinous incident. He is safe and is being examined at a local medical facility,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang said.
After the shooting, Trump wrote to Truth Social:
I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service and all of the law enforcement agencies for their swift response to the shooting that occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most of all, I want to express my condolences to the family of the person who died at the rally and the family of the other person who was seriously injured. It is hard to believe that something like this could happen in our country. At this time, we know nothing about the person who shot him. He is deceased. I was shot above my right ear. I knew right away that something was wrong because I heard a whoosh and a gunshot and felt the bullet break through my skin. I was bleeding profusely and realized what was going on. God bless America.
