Investigation Update: FBI Searches for Travis Decker
On Monday, the FBI conducted a thorough search in the rugged landscape of Washington state, hoping to uncover any leads about Travis Decker, who has been on the run for nearly three months after the tragic deaths of his three daughters.
According to Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison and Peter Orth, a senior FBI agent in Yakima, there’s still uncertainty about Decker’s fate—whether he’s alive or deceased remains unclear. During a press conference, Morrison emphasized the challenges posed by the area’s dense vegetation, stating, “You can’t get too thorough with a search like this. Someone could easily stray just a short distance from the trail and remain unnoticed.”
Decker, a trained military survivor, has been a suspect since June 2, when the bodies of his daughters—ages 9, 8, and 8—were discovered at the Rock Island Campground in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest.
Authorities revealed that one of the girls was found in a truck, her hands tied and a plastic bag over her head, after her mother reported her missing when she didn’t return from a court-ordered visit.
Sheriff Morrison vowed not to relent, saying, “We will not be merciless. We will not give up.” Around 100 agents and other law enforcement personnel are involved in the ongoing search efforts, which included closing the popular campsite and trailhead to facilitate their operations.
Search teams planned to inspect the nearby Icicle Creek, but other investigators focused on a grid search within a quarter-mile radius of the campsite. Morrison remarked on the difficulty of capturing Decker if he’s still navigating the wilderness, adding that if he’s alive now, he’s likely “very tired.”
Authorities have confirmed that Decker is the sole suspect in the tragic case, as his DNA has been linked to the crime scene, with no other profiles found. They underscored their determination to locate him, with Morrison expressing confidence that, even without his uniform, another officer would eventually track him down.
