FBI Rescues Missing Autistic Teen in New Jersey
In Newark, New Jersey, FBI agents successfully rescued a missing 17-year-old boy with autism after a nearly two-day search in frigid conditions. Local authorities, along with the Coast Guard, worked tirelessly to locate him in challenging terrain.
Joel Medina, who functions at a level comparable to a 6-year-old, disappeared near his home on a Friday and spent multiple nights exposed to the cold. This prompted a rapid response from multiple agencies.
FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the effort, stating that it showcased “the FBI’s best efforts.” He praised the teamwork that went into protecting Medina. “This was a great story for the FBI, mobilizing partners and resources without giving up,” he said.
Initial reports suggested that Medina wandered into a wooded conservation area nearby that featured a trail system. Surveillance footage from his home showed no signs of him leaving, raising concerns about a possible abduction. This led the Egg Harbor Township Police Department to collaborate with search and rescue teams from surrounding counties.
The operation involved aerial searches conducted by drone teams, New Jersey State Police, and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters. Ground searches were carried out by K-9 teams and divers also searched nearby waters.
On Saturday morning, the FBI joined the search, examining potential surveillance footage and interviewing individuals in the area. They focused on a grid search of the woods surrounding Medina’s home. By around 9:30 p.m., FBI aircraft had conducted a thorough search, eventually locating the area of interest deep within the preserve.
After enduring the elements, agents braved muddy terrain and darkness to find Medina curled up next to a tree. He was discovered only wearing shorts and a T-shirt, so the FBI escorted him out while ensuring his safety from above.
When the agents emerged, many bore scratches from the dense brush they navigated. Thankfully, Medina is now safe at home, and the community can breathe a sigh of relief.
