FBI looks into the death of a passenger on Carnival Firenze close to Catalina Island

Tragic Incident on Carnival Cruise Line Ship

A tragic event unfolded on a Carnival Cruise Line ship early Monday, resulting in the death of a passenger who seemingly fell from a balcony while sailing near Catalina Island.

The incident occurred aboard Carnival Florence, which was navigating the coast of Southern California. According to the cruise line, a female passenger climbed over her stateroom balcony and fell onto a lower deck. This distressing situation was reported by her family, who promptly informed the ship’s crew.

“As is standard practice following such incidents, law enforcement boarded the vessel while it was anchored at Catalina Island to collect details,” stated the cruise line, emphasizing that all necessary authorities were notified.

The family eventually disembarked the ship and returned home, while Carnival expressed its condolences, saying, “Carnival’s care team is offering support to the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.”

The FBI confirmed its involvement in the case, announcing that it is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death. “The FBI was alerted to the vessel and is actively looking into the reported death,” the Los Angeles field office said.

It’s still unclear why the passenger fell from the balcony, and her identity has not yet been revealed.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that its Avalon Sheriff’s Department search and rescue teams assisted in the situation. They have referred further inquiries to the FBI.

This incident adds to a string of recent tragedies involving cruise ships. Just last week, two fatal emergencies occurred aboard the Carnival Splendor during a single voyage, though officials clarified that the two incidents were unrelated. One involved a 67-year-old woman who drowned while snorkeling, and hours later, another passenger in his 70s reportedly fell overboard after climbing over the ship’s safety barrier.

Additionally, two Carnival guests lost their lives due to drowning at the company’s private resort in the Bahamas.
