FBI releases surveillance video of ballot drop box fire in search of suspect

The FBI released surveillance footage of an unidentified suspect setting an incendiary device on a ballot box in Portland, which is part of several incidents in Oregon and Washington ahead of the 2024 presidential election. One of them.

Investigators say the suspect is a white male between 30 and 40 years old with short hair and a bald head. He is believed to have experience in metal fabrication and welding.

Surveillance camera footage shows the person approaching the box in an early 2003-2004 Volvo S-60 sedan with dark wheels and a light interior. It is said that it was equipped with Officials say the car does not have the Volvo logo on its front grille.

At the time of the Oct. 28 incident, the vehicle had an incorrect Washington state temporary license plate on the rear, but no license plate on the front. Officials said the plate is unrelated to Volvo and may not currently be installed on the vehicle.

According to the FBI, the first ballot box fire occurred between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Oct. 8 in Vancouver, Washington. No ballots were damaged in the incident.

Two more incidents occurred between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Oct. 28 in Vancouver and Portland. Hundreds of ballots were destroyed at drop boxes in Vancouver, and officials said three were damaged in Portland.

Ballot boxes were equipped with fire extinguishing systems, but in Vancouver, the system inside the drop boxes malfunctioned and many more ballots were destroyed.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of suspects in these crimes. (FBI)

All three incidents involved improvised incendiary devices placed outside the box. Investigators recovered enough material from the equipment to link all three fires.

Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey called the incident a “direct attack on democracy” days before Election Day.
