FBI Reports Jack Smith Oversaw Private Conversations of Almost Twelve GOP Senators During January 6 Investigation

Investigation into Trump’s Election Challenge Involves Congressional Oversight

Former special adviser Jack Smith reportedly monitored communications from various Republican Congress members while investigating President Donald Trump’s attempts to dispute the 2020 election results, according to reports. Key Republican senators, including Tommy Tuberville from Alabama, Josh Hawley from Missouri, and Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee, raised concerns after Dan Bongino, an assistant director at the FBI, was tasked with oversight of the probe. Fox News indicated that this surveillance connected to discussions regarding plans to contest the certification of election votes.

Senator Chuck Grassley expressed strong criticism on social media, suggesting that the FBI’s actions in surveilling several of his Republican Senate colleagues during the inquiry into an alleged “electoral conspiracy” were comparable to the Watergate scandal. He emphasized that this type of “weaponization” by the Biden administration was unprecedented.

Bongino voiced his frustration, stating, “It’s absurd that I need to clarify this on Capitol Hill. It’s evident that the FBI has previously been used to monitor the private communications of lawmakers for political reasons.” He added, “That era is over.”

Smith’s investigation also extended to various conservative organizations, one of them being Turning Point USA, a student-focused group. It targeted individuals like former Trump administration official Jeffrey Clark, according to whistleblower revelations shared with Grassley.

In August 2024, Smith obtained a new charge against Trump, following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld immunity claims related to earlier indictments. After Trump triumphed over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, District Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed the lawsuit at Smith’s request on November 25, 2024.

General Merrick Garland released Smith’s findings on January 14th, shedding light on Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. Garland had appointed Smith in November 2022 to lead the investigation into these allegations, along with the handling of classified materials by the then-president.

Neither Smith nor the FBI responded to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation at the time.
