FCC chair Brendan Carr set to be questioned by the Senate

FCC Chairman Daniel Carr to Testify Before Senate Committee

The Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, is set to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday. His appearance will center around his controversial request for ABC to take Jimmy Kimmel’s show off the air.

Joining Carr will be two other FCC commissioners, Olivia Trusty and Anna M. Gomez. Back in September, Carr had reportedly issued a veiled threat to ABC and Disney due to remarks Kimmel made regarding an assassination suspect tied to Charlie Kirk.

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas and the committee chairman, previously critiqued Carr’s remarks, likening his tone to that of a mob boss. This happened after Carr warned that there could be repercussions for ABC if Kimmel didn’t alter his behavior.

Carr had stated, “They can either do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies need to adjust their conduct regarding Mr. Kimmel. If not, there could be more action needed by the FCC.”

Cruz also expressed concern about the implications of government interference in speech, saying, “It’s dangerous for the government to decide what speech it supports and what it doesn’t. Threatening to take you off the air if they don’t like your words is just wrong.”

Kimmel’s brief suspension over his comments, suggesting that Kirk’s assailant was a supporter of former President Trump, didn’t last long. He was back on the air the next week and is contracted with Disney until 2027.

Carr has gained notoriety for aligning closely with the Trump administration on aggressive oversight of media outlets, initiating inquiries into ABC News, CBS News, NBC News as well as NPR and PBS.

This story is still developing, and further updates are anticipated.
