FCC chairman climbs WKRG broadcast tower to highlight, promote industry

Fort Spain, Alabama (WKRG) – Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Kerr is on mission straight to the top of WKRG News 5's 1,865-foot high-rise broadcast tower.

Tapped to lead the committee by President Trump, Carr traveled to Spanish Fort to the Fog Fort Monday morning to highlight an industry that many people don't know existed.

“If we continue to expand connectivity, we need more tower climbers,” Kerr said. “It's a great job. It's a good paying job and a career.”

After a harness and safety check, he took a 20-minute ride on a lift called “Pan” and moved to Nexstar Tower, where the real work of climbing began.

Only about 200 people have climbed and maintained these large broadcast towers across the country. There was 201 on this day.

“It's always a fun experience to get up in the air and hang it with the crew of the tower,” Kerr said.

Army veteran and now Tower engineer Hasani Hogan were on the crew.

“What a man. It shows his courage, his abilities, his commitment to the broadcasting industry and our people who do this,” he said of Carr. “He's done it before and wants to do it again.”

Almost an hour and a half later, the FCC chairs were back to the ground, but still looked up. “Hasani and his crew were amazing. They're doing a great job.”

His mission to pay attention to the work is now accomplished.

The climb is argued that the administration violates federal regulations by public broadcasters as government agencies investigates allegedly “a commercial broadcast.”
