The FDA announced plans to ban red dye No. 3 from the U.S. food supply, citing long-standing health concerns including cancer.
“The list of effects is long. They've been difficult to prove,” Hilary Kennedy of “Four Minute Buzz” told Jill Savage and Matthew Peterson of “Blaze News Tonight.” Ta. “But overall, they are associated with cancer, hyperactivity in children, agitation, brain racing, and sluggishness.”
This dye is used not only in food but also in cough syrups.
“It's like cough syrup needs dye,” Peterson says. “What's interesting to me is, why now? Why would we do this now? And aren't there lots of other substances like this that we use in our food all the time?” Do you?”
“I think people are starting to realize, 'This is not healthy, why do we have this here?'” And one of the reasons we're hearing about it now is that there's not much testing on this. It’s not being done,” Kennedy responds.
But while some are just beginning to wake up, others like Sen. Tommy Tuberville have been championing the cause for quite some time and questioning FDA officials about the harmful effects of Red Dye No. 3.
“Red dye No. 3 is known to cause cancer in cosmetics, but is it still allowed in food? I don't understand that,” Tuberville said on January 15. He said this at a public hearing on the same day.
“It's prohibited for use in cosmetics, so you can't put this on your skin, but you can continue to take this for many more decades after this,” Savage says, adding that we're not allowed to use it in any way. , while pointing out that other dyes still remain.
“You could say this is a victory for red dye No. 3, but after that there are others like red dye No. 40 and yellow dye No. 5,” she added.
“That's the difficult part,” Kennedy says. “You can ban red dye No. 3, but as you said, red dye No. 40 also exists. So you can replace it with all the other chemicals that are not banned. Masu.”
