Federal agents are shot at while carrying out immigration enforcement in Chicago

An investigation is ongoing following a series of violent incidents on Saturday in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, where federal immigration agents faced four attacks. Rioters shot at officials, hurled debris, and even used vehicles aggressively, which officials labeled as an unprecedented assault on law enforcement.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the driver of a black Jeep fired a weapon and attempted to escape, thereby cornering agents in a nearby street and alley during an arrest operation. As tensions rose, investigators resorted to using flashbang devices while the crowd retaliated by throwing bricks and paint cans from rooftops. Chicago police helped to clear the area, and while there were no injuries reported, several vehicles were left damaged.

The violence unfolded across multiple blocks, with agents enduring four separate vehicular ramming attempts—one of which took place close to an FBI facility where protesters attempted to breach the perimeter before law enforcement regained control. In response to these provocations, protesters blocked roads and continued to throw objects, leading authorities to implement crowd control strategies.

For nearly three hours, investigators were subjected to gunfire, faced physical confrontations, and had to contend with a mob throwing debris.

A total of nine individuals were apprehended, consisting of eight U.S. citizens and one non-citizen, and faced charges ranging from assault to obstruction of justice. Meanwhile, the assailant who opened fire remains at large.

This violence is part of what officials describe as a “growing trend of dangerous violence and obstruction” directed towards federal law enforcement.

Chicago police verified that neither officers nor investigators were hit by gunfire, yet the attacks prompted immediate political reactions from homeland security officials. Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin accused Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson of inciting hostility towards law enforcement and suggested that the media played a role in spreading misinformation about immigration operations.

“JB Pritzker and Brandon Johnson have fostered a hostile environment that leads to attacks on federal law enforcement,” McLaughlin stated.

McLaughlin characterized the wave of attacks as “unprecedented” and attributed it to the current anti-police sentiment. She reassured that despite the violence, their mission would persist. “To the Antifa terrorists in Chicago: You will not stop us. You will not slow us down. If you confront law enforcement, you will face consequences,” she asserted.

The DHS is coordinating with the FBI and the Chicago Police Department to locate the individual responsible and to reassess security protocols for forthcoming operations.
